John Lithgow Responds to Fan Backlash Over Dumbledore Casting in HBO’s Harry Potter Series

Lithgow says he understands fan concerns but promises to honor the legacy of previous Dumbledore actors in the upcoming Max reboot.

John Lithgow has responded to fan criticism following his casting as Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming Harry Potter television series from Max. The actor addressed the backlash during an appearance on The One Show, acknowledging concerns about his nationality and age.

“I will be following the great Michael Gambon. I’m not an Englishman, although I’ve played one on TV,” Lithgow said, referencing his role as Winston Churchill in The Crown. “I remind everyone that I did play Winston Churchill on The Crown and did just fine.”

Lithgow continued, “But yes, I mean, it’s an enormous thrill. But I know there were plenty of people appalled that an American should be hired to play the ultimate English wizard. But, I will do my best.”

Fans on social media have raised concerns over Lithgow’s age, with some comparing the situation to that of Richard Harris, who passed away after filming the first two films. Lithgow, 79, would be 80 when the series begins airing and potentially 90 by the time the multi-season series concludes.

One Reddit user wrote, “He’s an incredible actor. But I’m just worried whether he’s too old, and we might end up having another Richard Harris situation down the line.”

Lithgow joins a cast that includes Nick Frost as Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thalon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. The casting for the central trio—Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley—has not yet been announced.

The Harry Potter reboot is expected to begin filming this summer and will adapt one book per season. A premiere is tentatively scheduled for 2026.
