Daniel Radcliffe Wins First Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ Revival

Radcliffe's portrayal of Charley Kringas earns him a Tony, marking a significant milestone in his post-Harry Potter career.

Daniel Radcliffe, renowned for his iconic role as Harry Potter, has achieved a significant milestone by winning his first Tony Award. Radcliffe was honored with the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for his portrayal of Charley Kringas in the revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s 1981 musical, Merrily We Roll Along. The original production famously lasted only 12 days before closing.

Emotional Acceptance Speech

During his emotional acceptance speech, Radcliffe began, “I’m gonna just talk fast and try not to cry. This has been one of the best experiences of my life. It’s been unbelievable.” He expressed immense gratitude to his co-stars Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, and the entire cast. Radcliffe also took a heartfelt moment to thank his parents, who were present in the audience, saying, “Happy Father’s Day, Dad. Thank you for playing Sondheim in the car and just loving me.”

In addition to his family, Radcliffe thanked the Broadway League and American Theatre Wing, director Maria Friedman, and everyone involved at the Hudson Theatre. His acknowledgments extended to his agent, dresser, and singing teacher.

Career Transition and Evolution

Reflecting on his career transition, Radcliffe stated, “When I finished Potter, I had no idea what my career was going to be. I’d already started doing some stage stuff, but I didn’t know what the future held at all. So, to have had the last year of playing Weird Al and also doing Merrily We Roll Along, I do think there was some…playing one character for a long time builds up in you a desire to do as many things as you possibly can. So yeah, I’m doing that right now.”

Competitive Field

Radcliffe faced strong competition for the award, including Roger Bart (Back to the Future: The Musical), Joshua Boone and Sky Lakota-Lynch (The Outsiders), Brandon Victor Dixon (Hell’s Kitchen), and Steven Skybell (Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club).

Broadway Milestone

The revival of Merrily We Roll Along not only marked Radcliffe’s fifth Broadway production and first Tony nomination but also won accolades for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Lead Actor in a Musical for Groff, and Best Orchestrations for Jonathan Tunick.

Radcliffe’s Broadway journey began in 2008 with Equus. He reflected on his evolution from film to stage, saying, “I didn’t know how the world was going to see me after those films were done. Between Equus and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, this place was giving me a chance to be something else and to find out who I was as an actor.”

‘Merrily We Roll Along’ Revival

Merrily We Roll Along tells the compelling story of three lifelong friends, played by Radcliffe, Groff, and Mendez. The musical starts in the present day, showing how the friends have grown apart, and works backward to the beginning of their friendship nearly two decades earlier. It explores themes of success, show business, and enduring friendships.
