British actor Paapa Essiedu is reportedly in talks to play the iconic role of Professor Severus Snape in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series, multiple sources have told The Hollywood Reporter. While no official agreements have been confirmed, insiders say Essiedu has been offered the part, though negotiations may still be in the early stages.
The role of Snape, the sarcastic and enigmatic Potions Master at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, is one of the most anticipated castings in the new adaptation. Originally brought to life by the late Alan Rickman in the beloved Warner Bros. film franchise, the character plays a key role as an antagonist in the first season, which will be based on J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Essiedu’s potential casting marks a significant moment for the franchise. Known for his standout performances in I May Destroy You, Gangs of London, and Black Mirror, the actor has a strong background in both stage and screen. A Royal Shakespeare Company alum, he earned critical acclaim for his performances in Hamlet and King Lear. If he takes on the role, Essiedu’s portrayal could offer a bold and refreshing perspective on Snape while reflecting HBO’s promise to diversify the series’ cast.
The series, described as a “faithful adaptation” of Rowling’s book series, aims to introduce Harry Potter to a new generation of fans while coexisting with the original films. Produced by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television, the show is helmed by writer Francesca Gardiner (His Dark Materials) and director Mark Mylod (Succession). Rowling herself will serve as an executive producer, alongside Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.
While Essiedu’s involvement has yet to be confirmed, rumors surrounding other casting choices continue to swirl. Bridge of Spies actor Mark Rylance is reportedly close to signing on as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, while speculation about Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy playing Lord Voldemort has been dismissed.
HBO acknowledged the intense fan interest in a statement: “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
The series is slated for a 2026 debut, with each season focusing on one of the seven books in Rowling’s series. Alongside new cast members, the show promises to remain true to the original storylines and characters that fans have cherished for over 25 years.
Stay tuned as details emerge about what could become one of the most highly anticipated shows of the decade.
