Rare Harry Potter First Edition Book Sells for Nearly $400,000
The rare 1997 first printing, one of only 500 hardcover copies, fetched $320,000 plus premium at Heritage Auctions.

A rare first edition of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" sold for $320,000 at Heritage Auctions on October 14, with the buyer's premium bringing the final price to $400,000. The 1997 hardback is one of only 500 copies printed for public libraries, making it an exceptionally scarce collectible.
The book includes all the key first edition points collectors seek: the Wendy Cooling review printed on the front board, the iconic "1 wand" misprint listed twice on page 53, and a copyright page crediting "Joanne Rowling." The rear board features misspellings of "Philosopher's" and "Wizardry and Witchcraft."
A Library-Exclusive First Edition
"This is personally one of my favorites; I'm sure it was one of yours," said auctioneer Samantha Sisler. "The books were given to libraries for children to read. Finding one in this quality is quite remarkable."
Heritage Auctions noted that both hardback and paperback first editions were published simultaneously, so neither has "bibliographical priority," but the hardcover is notably scarcer because only 500 copies were produced for library distribution.
Auction Details and Other Sales
The listing described the book as in great condition, with light rubbing at the spine ends and corners, minor scratches on the rear board, and lightly browned text that is less so than typically found. The volume sold after a four-minute bidding war.
The same auction included several signed Rowling first editions. A U.S. first edition of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" sold for $18,750, while signed first printings of "Chamber of Secrets" and "Prisoner of Azkaban" each fetched $4,000, and "Goblet of Fire" went for $3,000, all including buyer's premium.
The Wizarding World's Enduring Value
The sale underscores the lasting appeal of Rowling's original novels as Warner Bros. Discovery prepares to debut its HBO series adaptation. The first season, titled "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," premieres December 25, 2026, with a planned run of seven seasons.
As the Wizarding World expands on screen once again, the market for rare first editions shows no signs of cooling. Collectors and fans alike will be watching future auctions for more pieces of literary history.
