A pristine first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone that sat forgotten in a Scottish attic for nearly 30 years has sold at auction for a record-breaking £17,000, setting a new world record for the title in paperback.

The paperback, originally priced at just £4.99, belonged to former book reviewer Katrina McNichol, who received it in 1997 while working for a magazine in the Scottish Highlands. The then-24-year-old reviewer never opened the debut novel by J.K. Rowling, instead tucking it away in storage as the Boy Wizard franchise grew into a global publishing phenomenon.

The mint-condition first edition was recently rediscovered when McNichol cleared out her loft in Edinburgh. Auction experts at Rare Book Auctions in Lichfield, Staffordshire, described the copy as the finest example of the title ever to reach the market, according to The Sun.

Record-Breaking Harry Potter Auction Result

The first edition Harry Potter book attracted international attention before selling to a private UK buyer for £17,000. Rare book specialist Jim Spencer said the hammer price shattered the previous world record for a first edition paperback of the title, which was also sold by the same auction house for £12,000 last year.

"This sale blew it out of the water and, to be honest, I am not surprised," Spencer told The Sun. "Because it had been kept in storage it was in pristine condition. It is amazing to think first edition Harry Potter paperbacks are now achieving almost as much as hardbacks were a decade ago."

Spencer noted that the buyer being based in the UK is notable for the domestic market, since the highest bids for first edition Harry Potter titles have historically come from the United States. He added that the condition of the book was central to the record-breaking result, calling it perhaps the finest example ever to come onto the market, and said the sale underlines the series' status as one of the defining literary phenomena of the modern age.

How to Identify a First Edition 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'

The copy carried several well-known first edition markers that collectors look for when authenticating Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. These include the missing "o" in "philosopher's" on the back cover, the phrase "Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft" (later amended in subsequent printings), and the famous duplicated "1 wand" entry on Harry's school supply list.

Owner Reflects on Forgotten Harry Potter First Edition

Now 53, McNichol said the discovery left her stunned. "Each week I received more than 20 titles to review, and it was impossible to feature them all," she said. "I've never quite known why I set this particular book aside, long before the Harry Potter phenomenon began, but I carried it with me from home to home with dozens of others, and I'm so glad that I did."

She added that she genuinely forgot the first edition existed until she came across it in a box three decades later. "It felt surreal. I knew how old it was and suspected it might be worth something. You don't expect to stumble across something so valuable in your own attic," she said. "The book deserves to be with someone who truly appreciates what it is, a small but genuine piece of publishing history."

The Harry Potter franchise continues to maintain a major theatrical footprint, with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child currently running on Broadway at the Lyric Theatre and in productions around the world.
