Something magical is hitting the auction block: the only known complete set of unbound and unfolded sheets of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Scheduled for sale at Heritage Auctions on May 8 and 9, these rare, unbound sheets are first editions of Philosopher’s Stone. What’s truly exceptional about these sheets is their state of preservation: they were never trimmed, bound, or turned into the finished books we are familiar with. Instead, they exist in a rare pre-publication format.
According to Francis Wahlgren, Heritage’s Director of Rare Books & Manuscripts, this find is “a possibly unique survival” and “the final form of the first Harry Potter book just prior to binding.”
The sheets reveal the imposition of page layouts on both sides, folded and gathered into 14 quires, totaling 224 pages—before trimming or binding. They feature printer’s codes, gray scales, and trim marks, with quire signature numbers on outer spine folds.
This discovery marks one of the very few pre-publication versions available to collectors, and notably, the only known set at this stage of production. It is also the first such set to be auctioned publicly, just before binding and trimming.
The sheets were originally obtained directly from a manager at Clays Ltd. by a private collector, and the current owner acquired them from that source.
This auction presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of Harry Potter publishing history. Stay tuned for updates on the final sale prices of these magical collectibles.
