Ginny Weasley Recast for Season 2 of HBO's Harry Potter Series
Gracie Cochrane will not return as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series, with her family citing unforeseen circumstances.

HBO's Harry Potter television series has confirmed its first major casting change, with Gracie Cochrane stepping away from the role of Ginny Weasley after Season 1. The recast was announced as production wraps on the first installment, which is set to premiere on Christmas on HBO and HBO Max.
In a statement, the Cochrane family said the decision was made due to unforeseen circumstances, adding that Cochrane was grateful to casting director Lucy Bevan and the production team for the experience. The family described her time in the Wizarding World as wonderful and said she was looking forward to future opportunities.
HBO responded with its own brief statement, expressing support for Cochrane and her family, thanking her for her work on Season 1, and wishing her well. Neither statement indicated any conflict with the production, and the tone from both sides suggested an amicable parting decided on behalf of the young performer.
Ginny Weasley is a relatively small presence in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, appearing primarily as the youngest Weasley sibling at Platform 9 3/4. However, the character grows substantially across the seven books, eventually becoming one of the central figures in Harry's personal arc. Whoever steps into the role for Season 2 will carry that character through the majority of her development on screen.
The HBO adaptation is being produced as a long-form series, with each book receiving its own season. Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner and writer, with Mark Mylod executive producing and directing multiple episodes. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films are also executive producers. The series is produced by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
Season 1, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, will debut on Christmas Day. Season 2 has already been greenlit, with production expected to begin in the fall. The new Ginny Weasley has not yet been announced.
