The eight-episode order means Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone will get far more screen time than its 2001 film counterpart, which ran just over two and a half hours. That extra runtime opens the door for storylines, characters, and subplots that the movies simply couldn't fit.
Lithgow hinted at exactly that, adding: "We get to run down all those wonderful little off-ramps that are in the plotting of the books. And I think that's going to be the case for the next several seasons."
The comments also confirm production on Season 1 has officially wrapped, keeping the series on track for its Christmas 2026 premiere on HBO and Max.
As for which Harry Potter book is his favorite? Lithgow never answered. He had previously mentioned on the Smartless podcast that he was partway through Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, so he may still be making his way through the series. Given what he dropped instead, fans will probably forgive the dodge.
