Harry Potter fans finally have a key detail about the upcoming HBO series: Season 1 will consist of eight episodes. John Lithgow, who plays Albus Dumbledore in the new adaptation, revealed the news on the red carpet at the 2026 Tony Awards - almost accidentally.

Asked by CBS Mornings about his favorite book in the Harry Potter franchise, Lithgow bypassed the question entirely and delivered a much bigger update instead. "We just finished the very first, and it was thrilling and so much more than I expected because we are doing eight episodes to complete one entire book," he said. "The movies only had two hours; we have eight hours. There's much more storytelling to do."

The eight-episode order means Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone will get far more screen time than its 2001 film counterpart, which ran just over two and a half hours. That extra runtime opens the door for storylines, characters, and subplots that the movies simply couldn't fit.

Lithgow hinted at exactly that, adding: "We get to run down all those wonderful little off-ramps that are in the plotting of the books. And I think that's going to be the case for the next several seasons."

The comments also confirm production on Season 1 has officially wrapped, keeping the series on track for its Christmas 2026 premiere on HBO and Max.

As for which Harry Potter book is his favorite? Lithgow never answered. He had previously mentioned on the Smartless podcast that he was partway through Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, so he may still be making his way through the series. Given what he dropped instead, fans will probably forgive the dodge.
